Style Tips for Family Photography

Sometimes just getting your toddler to wear pants feels like it ought to earn you a medal. I get that the idea of dressing your entire family as a cohesive unit can seem like an impossible goal at times. Did you know that your session with me includes a complimentary wardrobe planning session? Whatever help you need, I am at your service, be it digging through your closets or accompanying you on a personal shopping excursion. We are so lucky to have such an abundance of great style right at our fingertips. I do not know of another small town with the incredible selection that we have right here in Barrhead. I love collaborating with our local shops to find something to suit your family perfectly. Every item pictured in this post can be found right here in our own local Barrhead boutiques! I have pulled together a few outfits to help you get a sense of the fashion options we have at hand, and I look forward to pulling together more of these inspiration shoots as the seasons change.

Some of my favourite general style "rules" are:

  1. Match general tones like "cool" or "warm" neutrals, not exact colours.
  2. Combine a variety of textures for dimension and interest: lace, chunky knits, drapey jersey knits or chiffon, soft chambray, crisp dark jeans or khakis, and add scarves or chunky necklaces for extra dimension.
  3. When in doubt, wear a dress! I love to capture femininity and movement in my images. There is no doubt that a woman can be just as much a goddess in jeans as a gown, but it translates a bit easier to the camera when you are feeling a bit flirty &/or glamorous, and I love to see that fabric flowing!
  4. Keep it comfortable. My sessions are meant to be laid-back and deeply personal, and no one feels like their truest selves in stuffy clothing. Let your kids wear their new clothes at least once before your session to make sure they aren't itching & pulling. Dress for the weather so no one is uncomfortable in the heat, cold, or mosquitos. Bring closed footwear so our inevitable walks in the wilderness aren't prickling little toes.
  5. Avoid more than one set of stripes per group, and if including patterns, keep these and other bold patterns to the little people (who have less surface area and are intended to be the center of attention).
  6. Avoid solid blacks and solid whites (hello boring, meet distracting).
  7. Be true to yourselves!
